Menampilkan Shapefile Sebagai Web Mapping Tanpa Web Server

Tom Carden telah melakukan eksperimen untuk menampilkan ESRI shapefile di web browser dengan Javascript menggunakan HTML5 canvas element tanpa membutuhkan web server seperti MapServer, GeoServer, ArcIMS atau lainnya . Saat ini baru di ujicobakan pada browser Firefox dan Safari saja.

Dengan teknik ini, rendering shapefile lebih cepat daripada menggunakan web server. Walaupun kecepatan ini bergantung pada hosting server tempat file-file yang ditampilkan tersebut di simpan. Tipsnya, usahakan shapefile ukurannya sekecil mungkin, semakin kecil ukuran shapefile, semakin cepat ditampilkan di web.
